Home Help and Respite Care

Things it might be helpful to know about this program:

  • Home Help provides light housekeeping for seniors and adults with disabilities. Light housekeeping includes tasks such as sweeping, wiping surfaces, laundry, vacuuming, and light meal preparation, and will be limited to areas used by the client in the home.
  • Respite Care offers short-term personal care services and light housekeeping for the purposes of providing relief for family and caregivers. Personal care services include help with bathing, dressing and toileting, light meal prep, and socialization (e.g. conversation, activities such as drawing or painting, etc.)
  • To be eligible for service, clients must be 55+ or be an adult with a cognitive or physical disability, be unable to manage their own homemaking or personal care needs but wish to continue living independently in the community.
  • Both services cost $13.25/hour.
  • Eligibility for service will not be denied on the basis of language or disability. Supports will be arranged for as needed.


Once in service you can expect the following:

  • Reconnect staff will conduct an assessment with you to determine what services are needed, to document a care plan and a safety plan, and to learn more about your home environment.
  • Service may be adjusted based on agency needs. This might happen if a staff person is ill, if there is inclement weather or if there is an emergency we need to respond to. We will let you know if your service will be adjusted.
  • Your service will always be provided by a trained professional.
  • Your service may not always be provided by the same staff person.
  • Changes in your care plan, your health and significant events or concerns will be documented.
  • You may be discharged from service for the following reasons:
  • Client choice
  • Moving out of our service area
  • Moving to a long-term care home
  • If your healthcare needs become more than we can manage
  • If you or someone in your home exhibits aggressive or violent behaviour to our staff, either verbal or physical
  • If there are safety concerns in the home such as severe hoarding, infestations (bugs, mice, bedbugs, etc), aggressive or uncontrolled pets, smoking in the home or toxic fumes in the home.
  • Being away from services for more than 30 days. This does not include hospital stays.
  • You will be made aware of the agency’s complaint process and how to access it.
  • You will be made aware of your right to privacy, how your personal health information is being kept secure, and how and under what circumstances the agency will collect, use or disclose your personal health information.
